3 Content Strategy Tips for Pinterest

3 Content Strategy Tips for Pinterest

Wondering why you need to embrace these other Pin formats? I’m going to break it all down by sharing today 3 content strategy tips and why you need to diversify your Pinterest content!

Standard Pins, Video Pins, Idea Pins… have you ever wondered where you even begin when you’re creating content for Pinterest?

I hear ya! It can be overwhelming. But it’s really important that instead of putting the blinders on and keeping your head down with what you’re “comfortable with” (aka probably Standard/Static Pins), you lean into these other Pin formats on Pinterest.

Types of Pinterest Pin Formats We Can Use for Diversification

Before I get into the why of content diversification on Pinterest, it’s important to discuss some of the most common Pin formats and what type of Pins I’m suggesting you create and implement as part of your Pinterest strategy.

For myself, and my clients, I recommend creating Standard, Video, and Idea Pins on a weekly basis. Now, as far as how many Pins for each type of format, it varies. But, these are what I create on a weekly basis.

If you’d like to learn more about each of these types of Pin formats and what I consider to be best practices for creating high-quality Pinterest Pin images, I have an entire blog post devoted to that here!

Diversity Allows You to Connect With More Pinners

One practice I’ve always made sure to keep up with is using Pinterest from “the other side”. Yes, I’m a Pinterest marketer, but I still use Pinterest almost daily as a user/Pinner. Meaning I’m performing my own searches.

Something I’ve noticed about myself is that I definitely have my preferences as far as types of Pin formats I’m interested in clicking on, saving, etc. when I’m searching on Pinterest. And something even more interesting I’ve noticed is that depending on the type of content I’m searching for, I might be more drawn to a specific Pin format.

Here’s an example. I recently was searching for maternity outfit inspiration specifically for Disney World, because I’m currently pregnant and we were getting ready for our big Disney trip!

Because I was just looking for ideas and I wasn’t ready to buy, I was super interested in Idea Pins for this specific search because I could quickly click through multiple different ideas and options.

On the other hand, when I searched for “healthy dinner recipes” the other day, I was more interested in Video Pins and Standard Pins, where I knew I’d have a link I could click for that Pin format.

Tip: In case you didn’t know, you can’t add a link to Idea Pins!

So in a nutshell, it’s important to diversify your content via different Pin formats on Pinterest. Depending on the unique Pinner and their behavior, and also your unique niche/business, this allows you a greater opportunity to connect with your audience!

What resonates and interests one Pinner in regards to the way you’re formatting your content might not pique the same interest in another Pinner!

Pinterest Wants Us to Diversify Our Content

We know that Pinterest wants us to not only share fresh content but share inspiration and help Pinners plan out special moments in their life. They want to create a high-quality experience for the Pinner that keeps them coming back!

So not only will fresh content keep Pinners coming back, but unique content formatted in various ways.

It’s no secret that Pinterest wants creators not only to diversify the type of content they’re sharing but to embrace the newest Pin format, which is Idea Pins!

And despite it always being “easier” to stick with the same old practices on platforms, that’s not how we’re going to grow, and it’s definitely not adapting!

In case you haven’t realized, people are devouring short-form video content. I mean…TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts… need I say more?

Not only does Pinterest have to adapt or die, but we have to as well as content creators on these platforms.

So embrace the video content and make the Video Pins and Idea Pins, and yes, let’s still share the love with Standard Pins as well.

The Pinterest Algorithm Prioritization

If you’re new here, then you might not have heard me say this before, but I do not think Idea Pins are optional when creating a balanced Pinterest strategy.

This might be great news to you, if you love Idea Pins, or you might hate me for saying this! And if you have no clue what Idea Pins are, well you should start with this blog post right here!

I do not think Idea Pins are optional, because as I stated before, Pinterest has straight-up said they want Pinterest creators to be making them.

And if that isn’t reason enough to get on board with Idea Pins, the Pinterest algorithm is still prioritizing Idea Pins! Idea Pins are still a newer Pin format, which might be part of the prioritization.

3 Content Strategy Tips for Pinterest

Conclusion and Parting Content Strategy Tips for Pinterest

I know it can be hard to do one more thing on one more platform, I really do! But in order to see the best results and growth on Pinterest, it’s really vital that you diversify the type of content you’re sharing.

Plus, here’s a bonus tip. If you’re seeing one type of Pin format really resonating more than another, you can always increase the number of fresh Pins you’re making in that format. Then maybe decrease the number of Pins you’re making in another format.

However, please note, I still recommend serving all 3 Pin formats to your audience on a weekly basis.

So as a recap, here are the 3 main reasons you need to diversify your Pinterest content. And by content I mean the format in which you’re serving your businesses content:

  1. Adding diversity to the way you share your content allows you to connect with your audience in unique ways, and this should also tell you more about your audience’s behavior and what resonates with them the most.
  2. Pinterest wants us to diversify our content because it creates a better user experience.
  3. Sometimes you just gotta play the game. Right now the algorithm is preferring Idea Pins, so they need to be a part of your strategy!

I hope you found this helpful and would love to hear your feedback in the comments below! I talked A LOT about Idea Pins in this blog post, so if you need to learn the ins and outs of Idea Pins, I highly recommend checking out my Idea Pin Starter Kit!

  1. Hello, this has been a very useful article, thank you.
I notice that there aren’t many video pins on Pinterest, so I’ll try and get mine in fast.
I’m a writer and am selling a comic which, although it lends itself to images which are are being shared around, not many people are buying the product. Yet.
I’ll check out other guides of yours as I’m interested to find how I can increase the click through to my website.
    Thanks again
